The femoral epicondyles are bony prominences located at the lower end of the femur, which is the thigh bone. They are located at the medial and lateral sides of the lower end of the femur, just above the knee joint. The medial femoral epicondyle is slightly larger and more prominent than the lateral one. These bony landmarks serve as attachment points for several important muscles, tendons, and ligaments that are involved in the movement of the knee and the lower leg. The medial epicondyle provides attachment for the tendons of the adductor muscles, while the lateral epicondyle provides attachment for the tendons of the lateral collateral ligament and the popliteus muscle. These bony structures are important in diagnosing and treating knee injuries and often used as reference points for surgical procedures.
